Performance Practice of Plainsong in the southern Low Countries (1250-1550), traced in local and contemporary sources
This study aims to give as full as possible an account of plainsong performance practice in the southern Low Countries, in Late Medieval and Renaissance times. From careful investigation of selected local and contemporary sources emerges new evidence on how plainsong and related polyphonies were performed. Sources include chant manuscripts as well as ordinaries, treatises and archive material. Results of the research are consolidated in performances and recordings of the chant group Psallentes, focusing on plainsong in the context of polyphony. Interactions between research and performance result in ´authentic´ as well as more present-day interpretations of plainsong.
