docARTES started in January 2004 and was set up as a collaboration between prominent institutions from Flanders and The Netherlands:

In September 2008, this docARTES partnership benefitted from international collaboration with three distinguished partners from the United Kingdom through the documa alliance.
In 2009 the first PhD in the arts was obtained in the docARTES programme.
