About docARTES

docARTES is an international doctoral programme for musicians and sound artists, supported by three universities, four arts colleges, and Orpheus Instituut. The programme is aimed at artists who wish to deepen their artistic practice (music, sound art) through artistic research.

Doctoral candidates are enrolled at one of the partners authorized to grant the doctorate and are supervised there by a supervisory team. The supervision covers the entire duration of the trajectory and guarantees both academic quality and institutional embedding.

In addition to institution-specific supervision, docARTES provides a joint curriculum that all doctoral candidates complete. This consists of eight multi-day sessions: four in the first year and four in the subsequent years. These gatherings form a learning and research environment where students from different partner institutions come together to present, reflect upon, and deepen their research. The common curriculum is built on a strong tradition of artistic research within docARTES and brings together an international community of researchers and artists.

The combination of institution-specific supervision and a joint training structure makes docARTES a unique program: firmly embedded in the partner institutions, while simultaneously enriched by the fruitful collaboration and added value of the common curriculum.

The curriculum has been organized by the docARTES partners since 2004 and is coordinated by Orpheus Instituut (Ghent, Belgium). Currently, about 60 PhD students are enrolled in the docARTES program.
