Andrew Hallock

Andrew is a singer and artistic researcher whose work explores early polyphony in relation to philosophy, science, and visual culture. A large portion of the year sees him on the road touring with the Dutch polyphony ensemble Cappella Pratensis and the Belgian art ensemble graindelavoix. Cappella Pratensis was awarded Gramophone’s 2024 Recording of the Year for its recording of Jacob Obrecht’s Missa Maria Zart. In 2022, graindelavoix’s recording Josquin the Undead also received the prestigious Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. He has performed and recorded with Sollazzo Ensemble, Ensemble Diskantores, Bach Choir and Orchestra of the Netherlands, Vox Luminis, and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging, appearing at major European festivals including Festival d’Ambronay, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Salzburger Festspiele, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Tage Alter Musik Regensburg, and Laus Polyphoniae. He holds degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.

Andrew’s writing and research emerge from his long-term engagement with early music practice, casting a critical eye on how the musical past is interpreted, performed, and theorised today. His doctoral project, The Folded Map, treats polyphonic music not as a walled-off domain, but as a way of thinking about the world. Focusing on the period in which musical notation, visual perspective, and new models of the cosmos were developing alongside one another, the project asks how these different modes of representation shaped what could be known and imagined. Through historically informed experiment and productive distortion, it reactivates tensions within the repertoire around authorship, representation, agency, and knowledge, pushing the corpus to its breaking point.
