Born in Hong Kong, Guy Shawn Wong is a computer musician, sound artist, and researcher based in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Guy Shawn earned his Master of Music in Sonology with distinction at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague in 2025 and a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media with First Class Honours at the City University of Hong Kong in 2011. In 2025, he was awarded the Konrad Boehmer Prize for Outstanding Research for his work on machine perspective, and received the HKAC Creators for Tomorrow Research Fund in 2024. Formerly a lecturer in sound design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he works actively as an independent music producer and audio developer. His creations include EnListening #1 & #2 (multidisciplinary collaborations with Butoh dance), Contingent Relations, and Cellunoise#2, presented at ZKM Karlsruhe, WaveFieldSynthesis Festival, and Amare.
As a PhD candidate in the docARTES programme, Guy Shawn is developing his research project Arbitrary Intelligence: Imperceptible Forms and Extended Musical Coherence in Computer Music. His research questions anthropocentric notions of intelligence by exploring alternative musicalities proposed by machine-learning architectures. By examining how non-human algorithmic reasoning structures generate coherent yet unfamiliar musical organisations, his work develops engagement and presentational strategies to mediate computational creativity and expand human listening.
