Born in Turin in 1992, he is of Spanish and Italian heritage and is currently based in Germany.

Matias Mucchi Alonso is a percussionist and interdisciplinary artist whose practice integrates performance, stage direction, and artistic research. He studied classical percussion at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, before earning his Master’s degree in 2021 at the University of Music and Theatre Rostock in Germany. Between 2024 and 2025, Matias participated in the intensive dance programme at the Dance Institute Berlin and completed an advanced course in stage lighting design at Diivant Scenic Art & Lighting Design.

In 2019, he founded the interdisciplinary collective SONDER Ensemble, where he serves as artistic director, concept developer, stage director, and performer, with projects presented at international festivals including Bologna Festival, Bad Kissingen Festival, and Realtime Festival Bremen.

In 2025, he was awarded First Prize at the international Köster Prize für Neue Musik Bremen for the music-theatre production Pasta Diva, preludio alla Norma, presented with his SONDER Ensemble.

Since 2025, he has been a PhD candidate in the docARTES programme at Orpheus Instituut and the University of Antwerp, developing the artistic research project Resonances between Dance and Contemporary Music: Transdisciplinary Interpretation Techniques and Methods. His work aims to create new compositional and interpretative methodologies for classical musicians, in which the performer’s physical movement becomes a harmonic gesture, extending sonic perception through the visual dimension and carrying a value equivalent to a note in the score.

In 2017, he won the audition for a temporary contract as First Assistant Percussionist at the Teatro Regio in Turin, and from 2018 to 2022, he worked as a stage percussionist and orchestral technical manager at the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. Parallel to his projects, Matias expanded his artistic training by exploring and studying the interdisciplinary connections between sound, movement, and visual arts through internships and stages at leading theatres across Europe and Canada, collaborating with renowned directors and artists including Robert Wilson, Robert Lepage, Romeo Castellucci, Robert Carsen, Dimitris Papaioannou, and Tom Visser.

His interest in music education has led him to work as a music teacher in several schools in Italy and Germany, exploring how children engage with music and art. He has received numerous awards and scholarships, including First Prize at the Music Prize Competition in Rostock, Second Prize at the HMT Interdisciplinary Competition in Rostock, and support from the Claussen Simon Stiftung (Hamburg), Alfred Toepfer Stiftung (Hamburg), and Caspar David Friedrich Stiftung (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
