Yannis Ekonomou was born in Thessaloniki in 1982. He is a graduate Engineer of Musical Technology and Acoustics from the University of Crete(GR). He continued his studies in The Netherlands, at Codarts University of Professional Education, where he completed his master studies in World Music. Currently he is a PhD candidate of Leiden University in Artistic Research. He studied music with Omer Erdogdular (ney and Ottoman classical music) , Giorgos Simeonidis (ney), Harris Lambrakis (ney), Ross Daly (makam theory and practice), Dhruba Ghosh (Hindustanic music) and Henry Tournier (Hindustanic music). From 2001 until today he has participated as a sound engineer and a ney player in various projects, concerts and recordings. Currently he lives in Greece, where he teaches ney at the Technological Educational Institute of Epirus, Department of Traditional Music.
