Hendrik Vanden Abeele is a pianist and was awarded a Higher Diploma in piano with distinction. In 2000 he also became a Master of Music specialising in piano, again with distinction. Besides his activities as teacher, pianist and lecturer, he is a free-lance singer with various vocal ensembles, being a full-time baritone with the Vlaams Radio Koor (Flemish Radio Choir) between 2000 and 2005. Since 2007 he has also been a lecturer at Amarant.

Hendrik Vanden Abeele founded the Gregorian chant ensemble Psallentes in 2000. This small group uses professionally-trained voices to investigate Gregorian chant from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. He has recorded more than thirty CDs and has performed in Europe, North America, New Zealand, South Korea, China and Japan.

His docARTES doctoral defense took place on December 15, 2014 at Leiden University.

His research dives into the development, construction and creation of a present-day performance practice of late medieval plainchant, based partly on his work with the Belgian chant group Psallentes.
