The research is focused on the development of the interaction between a live coder and an acoustic musician with focus on the pianist in particular.

The research is focused on the development of the interaction between a live coder and an acoustic musician with focus on the pianist in particular. Live coding is a relatively new field in the performing arts and its interaction with acoustic musicians is scarcely researched. Whilst classical chamber ensembles sometimes make use of live electronics in the form of pre­programmed patches, few works exist for live coder and instrumentalist. The aim of this research is to develop the pianist’s performance practice.

Through undertaking a number of case studies, the research will assess the classical pianist’s skills and their impact, relevance and need for development in live coding collaborations. An online library listing the possible sound outcomes of various piano sound and code combinations will be an applied outcome of this research.
