Majella Clarke is an Australian conductor, sound artist, and doctoral researcher in the docARTES programme, affiliated with MetamusicX and the ERC Posthuman Music project in Orpheus Instituut. Her practice-led research explores expanded conducting through computation, sound, and composition, examining how human and non-human agencies can redefine ensemble dynamics, posthuman aesthetics, and musical authorship. Her work seeks to expand 21st-century conducting as a posthuman, experimental practice, working with conducting gesture, scoring materiality, and technology into immersive and sensory experiences. Majella has conducted professional orchestras and contemporary ensembles across Europe, the USA and Australia.
Her interdisciplinary expertise bridges extensive musical training across contemporary repertoire and period performance with background in systems thinking, strategy, climate policy, and the digital economy. Her research is published in peer-reviewed platforms including Leonardo and xCoAx, with artistic work presented at venues and festivals such as Musica nova Helsinki, Ars Electronica, the Arvo Pärt Centre, and EMMA (Espoo Museum of Modern Art).
