Marie-Louise Wundling is a freelancing cellist and researcher based in Cologne, exploring the versatile sonic and musical possibilities of both historical and modern cello. In her artistic work she focuses on discovering the distinct sound worlds of different epochs, styles and instruments, asking herself what sound can reveal about other times, people and ourself.
After studying the modern cello in Salzburg, Zurich, and Essen, she completed a master’s degree in Historical Performance Practice at the Trossingen University of Music, complemented by additional musical impulses from Christoph Dangel, Shunske Sato and Mayumi Hirasaki.
She is regularly invited to perform with various ensembles such as Concerto Köln, Spira Mirabilis, the Gürzenich Orchestra, and the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra and appears in chamber music projects with artists such as Evgeny Sviridov and Midori Seiler. In her own artistic projects she regularly collaborates with artists of other fields such as dance, performance, composition and theatre. Her main interest lies in the exchange of different creative perspectives and visions during the work process, though which new artistic insight emerge. Since 2025, Marie-Louise is a docARTES PHD candidate at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerpen, focusing on research into vocality as fundamental principle of Romantic instrumental playing in Schuman´s work.
